Bryce Young: Panthers' Dave Canales has been "really good for me"
What it means:
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young told ESPN's David Newton that new head coach Dave Canales has been "really good for me" during the early part of the Panthers' offseason program.
The Panthers opened the offseason by hiring former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Dave Canales in an effort to develop 2023 first overall pick Bryce Young into a star. Canales was the quarterbacks coach with the Seahawks during Geno Smiths' surprising 2022 breakout season and operated as the Buccaneers' OC last year during Baker Mayfield's impressive bounce back season. While it's early days yet, the move has seemed like a good one so far. Young expressed satisfaction with Canales' "calming presence" and ability to communicate his offense, while Canales in turn praised Young's accuracy at all three levels of the field. The Panthers' offense scored the fewest points in the league in 2023, with Young finishing the season ranked 33rd in adjusted yards per attempt (5.0) -- a major concern, given there are only 32 teams. Hopefully with a new coach and a bolstered receiving group around him, Young can take the next step in 2024.
