Jacksonville Jaguars Player Updates

Gabe Davis

WR / Jacksonville Jaguars
Jaguars to sign receiver Gabriel Davis to 3-year deal
What it means
The Jacksonville Jaguars are signing free agent wide receiver Gabriel Davis to a three year contract, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports. Davis' tenure in Buffalo could never quite meet the lofty expectations the team had for him following his 4-touchdown, 201-yard game against the Kansas City Chiefs in the playoffs, but he still projected as one of the more interesting free agents in this year's receiver class. His arrival in Jacksonville appears to be a sign that Calvin Ridley will be on the move this offseason. While he himself has not shown an elite ability to earn targets, his presence could be a boon for teammates Christian Kirk and Zay Jones. Davis operated as a decent WR2/3 for the Bills, who unfortunately needed closer to WR1 production from the speedy wideout. He finished the 2023 season with a respectable 45 catches for 756 yards and 7 touchdowns while playing in one of the most high volume passing offenses in football. With Kirk, Jones, and tight end Evan Engram also soaking up targets in Jacksonville, Davis could see a dip in volume going forward.

Mac Jones

QB / Jacksonville Jaguars
Patriots deal Mac Jones to Jags for late round pick, pending physical
What it means
The New England Patriots are reportedly finalizing a trade that will send quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. As a first round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Jones helped lead the Patriots to a playoff berth in his rookie season. Unfortunately, things fell apart both on the field and off it for the Patriots and Jones, leading to multiple benchings in his second and third seasons. The Jaguars are likely hopeful that Jones can develop back into a decent backup after starter Trevor Lawrence dealt with injuries last season, while the Patriots are now officially moving on from the "Mac Jones Era". Hopefully the change of scenery will help Jones reset after the brutal last two years he spent in New England. With Jones now (almost) officially out of town, the Patriots can officially begin the search for a new quarterback. The Pats hold the third pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, putting them in range to draft their quarterback of the future if they so choose. Former LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels (+140) is the frontrunner to be selected third overall according to FanDuel Sportsbook's NFL Draft Betting Odds market.
