Smu Mustangs Betting in 2026

Coming off a 9–4 season (6–2 ACC) that ended with a 24–19 Holiday Bowl win over Arizona, the SMU Mustangs have firmly established themselves as contenders in their still-new league. Head coach Rhett Lashlee's up-tempo spread again centers on dual-threat quarterback Kevin Jennings, who returns for 2026 after throwing for 3,641 yards and 26 touchdowns and steering an offense that topped 30 points per game while averaging over 280 passing yards. Running back TJ Harden and leading receiver Jordan Hudson were among the top skill contributors in 2025, and while Jennings loses several of his primary targets to graduation, returning wideout Yamir Knight and a group of transfer additions give the offense pieces to reload around. On defense, All-America performers Isaiah Smith and Ahmaad Moses, along with All-ACC safety Isaiah Nwokobia, headlined a 2025 unit that ranked among the national leaders in takeaways and generated steady pressure on the quarterback. The main challenges for 2026 are navigating a deep ACC slate, replacing significant production on both lines, and cleaning up the turnovers that crept into Jennings' game late in the year — but continuity at quarterback and on Lashlee's staff gives the Mustangs a realistic shot at another eight-plus-win season and a return to the postseason. Fans tracking futures and weekly lines can follow the latest markets through FanDuel's NCAAF page for updated NCAAF betting odds.

Within the national landscape, SMU projects as a long shot rather than a front-line contender heading into 2026. FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Mustangs deep in the futures field — in the range of +12500 — to win the College Football Playoff National Championship for the 2026 season, a price (odds subject to change) that places them well behind the sport's favorites and among the longer shots on the board. That number reflects respect for SMU's 2024 College Football Playoff appearance, the program's first, and its 2023 AAC title, balanced against realism about heavy roster turnover and the depth of ACC and power-conference competition. To climb further, SMU must refine Jennings' efficiency and cut down on turnovers, develop a dependable run game around him, and sustain the takeaway-heavy defense — fifth nationally in turnovers gained in 2025 — as co-defensive coordinator Maurice Crum Jr. takes over play-calling from Scott Symons, now with the Dallas Cowboys. Long term, Lashlee and his staff are focused on stacking strong recruiting classes and making selective transfer-portal additions. If that roster building continues, the Mustangs' long-shot title price on FanDuel's National Championship odds board could steadily shorten over the next few seasons.
